8가지 덕목을 가리키는 글자에 이와 관련된 이야기나 동식물을 곁들인 그림을 말한다.
보통 8폭 병풍으로 만들어 집안을 장식하고 그 덕목을 되새기는 용도로 사용했다.
둘째 용(龍), 호(虎), 구(龜)등의 글자를 이용한 수호적 상징문자도로, 고대 사신 사상과
애미니즘, 풍수사상을 반영한 그림이다. 이는 풍요, 복, 장수 등 현세의 평안을 희망하는 그림이다.
